Product Review – Online Backup – OPENRSM CloudBackup

?What is it:

OPENRSM CloudBackup is a service that lets you store files and backup data securely to a nearly unlimited backup to internet vault. Unlike other services, CloudBackup lets you backup as little or as much data as you need with no restrictions. You pay a flat fee (which get’s you a BIG datastore) and only pay extra for the actual storage you use in excess of that.  It works the same on Windows, MAC, and Linux systems as well.

You can mount the CloudBackup drive as a network disk or with your web browser.), over WebDav or via the local http server.  CloudBackup keeps a local cache that allows most operations to be instantaneous with any changes being made in the background. The builtin backup utility works well and previous versions are kept if desired. This makes CloudBackup ideal for backup as well as a remote filesystem since it works with tools like robocopy, rsync, etc.  Block level incremental backup is supported through CloudBackup.

Key Features:

  • Facilitates worry-free, automatic backups
  • Keeps your data safe
  • Unlimited storage at per GB pricing. No complex math. No maximum limits
  • Supports multiple systems
  • Offers backup reporting to keep you informed
  • Works just like a disk
  • Provides online backup and storage for every computer you own.  Servers, Desktops, Notebooks

Who it’s for:

Due to the versitility of CloudBackup automated backup, accessing files from anywhere, and more is possible. The interface is easy to use and the setup is a snap compared to most other programs.  Therefore CloudBackup is designed for novice to expert computer users who are looking for a safe backup solution or to access files remotely without the restrictions offered by competitors.  Or, like me… BOTH. So the mapped drive looks just like any other network drive. And all your applications and utilities function seamlessly. You can let the scheduler backup all your changed files if you simply set it, and forget it.

The Good:

Set it and forget it backups. Set automatic backup and drive failure will no longer have to be a worry. Minimal bandwith use. It updates changed bytes, not whole files, and uses it’s cache as a buffer.  So bandwidth use is limited after the first backup. Easy management with powerful control. Options to keep previous versions, limit upload speed, backup previews, detailed logging. You can get dirty if you want but I hardly ever needed to access the manual. Works with your computers and software. The network drive can be used like an unlimited size USB drive. I use QuickBooks, AbiWord, and other software to use the network drive and it’s perfect. It’s also terrific for setting your collaborative software (wikiedit, etc.) to use it., to use the Network Drive. Whether you have Linux, MAC, or Windows makes no difference… It’s as simple as this… It just works.

Things to Know:

Depends on your internet connection. Inherent to CloudBackup is your broadband connection. If your broadband connection is restricted then your first backup cycle may be slow. But you can make it backup whenever is best and limit bandwith too.  But, with upload speed limiting and the highly efficient bandwidth utilization this isn’t a serious issue. It has to be said I guess I’m always open to do nearly the same for cheaper or free. CloudBackup is priced for economy while sporting features others just don’t have.

Why I reccomend it:

It’s one of the best solutions to have documents, files, photos, and data available in multiple locations (like your office and home) and it’s one of the best solutions for painless backup. Together, it’s a great combination. Add in the security and flexibility and I have to heartily recommend it.  Paying a small monthly fee to have his peace of mind is worth it for me.

How it Fares:

  • OPENRSM CloudBackup has more space and reliability than a local backup.
  • Files are still available for all programs with full capability unlike other solutions.
  • The backup to internet functionality is as good as a local backup.
  • You can use your existing backup or sync software or use the native backup from every five minute to once a week.

Summary:

CloudBackup is an inexpensive, flexible, powerful, and reliable data storage solution which can be used for many purposes. I can’t reccommend it if your internet access is slow (dialup) or heavily restricted. But in all other cases it’s a must do. Solutions that do what CloudBackup does for less might be available, but I havn’t seen one. CloudBackup is a rock solid way to make life simpler for my home and work computers.
